The Obama administration has
ended a longstanding rule under which Cubans who are arriving in United States
are automatically granted residency, regardless of whether they have visa or not.
This exceptional rule has been
there for long in the US immigration policy.
The rule which is known as ‘wet
foot, dry foot’ policy gave permission to Cuban visitors coming to US to stay
here. But, this rule will be put to end with immediate effect. This change had
been sought by Cuba officials from many years.
This shift had been planned for
months. The reason for this sudden announcement was to prevent giving an
advance warning to thousands of people who may take to the seas between Florida
and the communist ruled island.
The change had been negotiated
between Cuba and United States for several months. An agreement has also been
reached to allow people who had turned back to return.
In a statement made by Obama, it
has been mentioned that US will continue to welcome Cubans, just like it has
done to immigrants coming from various other countries.
A parole program that gives
permission to medical professionals from Cuba to enter US has also been ended
by the Department of Homeland Security.
The fact that, this program
prompted medical professionals to leave and sucked away the trained health
professionals from the country, so it was not liked by people in Havana.
Every year, thousands of Cubans
try to cross the 90 mile sea to come to Florida and the majority of them are
being intercepted by US Coast Guard.
The new policy has been welcomed
by Cubans as they believe that it will prevent human trafficking and discourage
thousands of Cubans from taking the dangerous journey.
According to Cuban foreign
minister, a major component of immigration crises has been eliminated. From now
on, only secure, legal and ordered immigrants from Cuba to the United States.
